Employment falls in West Sussex (North East) as pay rises to £2,846 a month

Payrolled employment in West Sussex (North East) fell 0.3% over the year to July 2026, 684 fewer workers, with a further monthly dip of 0.1% sustaining the downward pressure.
Across the South East, payrolled employment was broadly flat, down 0.3% over the year to July 2026. West Sussex (North East) ranked 12th of 20 sub-regional areas in the South East by employment change over the past year.
The median pay packet for workers in West Sussex (North East) stood at £2,846 in July 2026, up 4.4% over the past year and ahead of inflation at 3.03%. After a period of sharp inflation from 2022 that eroded real earnings, wages have been recovering. Workers in West Sussex (North East) are now £65 a month better off in real terms than in February 2022, when median earnings stood at £2,227 a month. The total pay bill in West Sussex (North East) rose 4.9% over the year, faster than headcount, suggesting average earnings per worker are improving.
